Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a teacher in Arizona?
To qualify as one of the Arizona teachers, individuals need to possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited higher education institution and complete a teacher preparation program as per the standard requirements. The Arizona Department of Education mandates specific coursework that corresponds to the desired teaching specialization. Arizona follows a two-tier system wherein teachers first apply for the Initial 3-Year Provisional Certificate based on their area of focus and then progress to a 6-Year Standard Certificate after gaining sufficient teaching experience.
What is the process to become a substitute teacher in Arizona?
You need to fulfill education courses and have a bachelor's degree from a college or university that has regional accreditation. Following this, the applicant must clear a background check and apply for the substitute certificate offered by the state. With this certificate, the candidate can serve as a substitute teacher in K-12 classrooms for a maximum of 120 days during a school year.
How do I keep my Arizona teaching certificate valid?
You can start to renew your certification from six months before its expiration date to one year after it has expired. If you hold multiple valid and renewable certificates, you may renew them all at the same time.
If a renewable certificate has been expired for more than two years but less than ten years, it may be eligible for renewal through the experienced educator option. Meanwhile, emergency certificates are granted upon request by a superintendent of a school district or charter school. An emergency substitute certificate is for temporary certified teacher absences, while an emergency teaching certificate is a contract for limited teaching duration.
