Q&A with Sundown Collins
California School of Education at Alliant International University
Master of Arts in Education – Special Education and Teaching, Bay Area Campus
Professional Information
Director of Special Education Services at Francophone Charter School of Oakland
Q: How did your Alliant experience prepare you for your career path?
A: My experience at Alliant allowed me to tailor my education for leadership in Special Education in the community I serve while teaching. I was able to attend classes virtually, at the campus, and at an Oakland public school campus. That kept me connected to my school community, building new relationships with colleagues, all while fitting it into my busy schedule as a teacher and single parent!
Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?
A: I love spending my days with children and championing for them.
Q: What inspires you to make a positive difference in the world?
A: The kids are amazing – they have it all inside them. I am grateful for the opportunity to witness and support their development.
Q: Share your advice for current students.
A: Communicate with your instructors and let them know who you are and what you are planning on achieving. They can be a wealth of knowledge, resources, and support for you. I am still in contact with and work with my former Instructors and professors. Also, schedule in time to care for yourself each day and prioritize it – like you would any other important meeting!
