New Medical School Launches in Mexico City, Aimed at Training Professionals to Meet Growing Health Demands

St. Luke Medical School offers Mexican and international students top general surgery program in partnership with international universities

MEXICO CITY (July 16, 2015) — In response to a growing demand for trained medical professionals with the necessary skills to address the country’s health needs, St. Luke Medical School of Alliant International University announced the opening of its Mexico City campus today. The new medical school, accredited by the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will open its doors in August 2015 with around 100 students forming its inaugural class.

As part of Alliant International University, St. Luke students will have access to educational exchanges in the U.S. and Mexico, residency programs with an international network of hospitals, and employment opportunities in the health care sector. Alliant is part of the Arist Education System, a global system of universities focused on health and human sciences.

"The main objective of St. Luke is training doctors committed to the complex demands of modern health service delivery, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation," said Ricardo Phillips, Arist Education System’s CEO for Latin America. “In order to keep pace with global innovations in health and human sciences, higher education will need to expand options and access to medical training. St Luke’s partnership with UNAM will provide an outstanding medical education and equip aspiring practitioners with the skills needed to pursue careers in growing health and human sciences fields.”

St. Luke Medical School will offer a professional degree in general surgery through the UNAM School of Medicine—the gold standard for medical education in Mexico. St. Luke students will learn from UNAM faculty and have opportunities to participate in collaborative research projects with UNAM and other teaching hospitals and research institutions.

Dr. Antonio Fraga Mouret will serve as St. Luke’s first academic dean, bringing a wealth of leadership and teaching experience with some of Mexico’s leading hospitals, research facilities and public health agencies. Dr. Mouret received his M.D. from the UNAM School of Medicine, with post-doctoral residencies in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota and in rheumatology at the University of Michigan. A distinguished medical educator, Dr. Mouret has over 49 years of teaching experience as a faculty member in master’s level and post-graduate programs, including UNAM.

With small class sizes of 30 students, St. Luke will provide personalized instruction, so more time can be devoted to building student competencies in clinical practice and patient care. Faculty will focus on multidisciplinary instruction and bilingual training for students, so that they can compete internationally and serve the needs of diverse patients.

The new medical school’s facilities feature the latest health care technologies for optimal instruction and research activities, including fully-equipped laboratories designed to help them in the development of clinical practice and other essential skills for health care careers. Classes begin on August 31, 2015.
