San Francisco Law School Accreditation

San Francisco Law School is accredited by the State Bar of California, Committee of Bar Examiners. As the most powerful state bar in the nation, the California Bar Association issues accreditation to law schools outside of ABA accreditation. San Francisco Law School has been continuously accredited since California accreditation began in 1937.

State Bar of California

Students who graduate from San Francisco Law School are eligible to practice law in the State of California upon passage of the California Bar Examination. Admissions requirements to practice law in California specify that students must have a J.D. degree from either an ABA-accredited or State Bar of California-accredited law school.

In order to maintain accreditation, California-accredited law schools must maintain a minimum five-year cumulative bar examination pass rate of 40% or higher. The average minimum pass rate for all California-accredited law schools is 58.51%. The average pass rate for San Francisco Law School specifically is 63%, which exceeds not only the minimum pass rate, but also the average pass rate. For more information, please see the State Bar of California’s Bar Examination Statistics.

Practicing Law in Other Jurisdictions

Study at or graduation from this law school may not qualify a student to sit for the bar examination of a state other than California or to be admitted to practice law in jurisdictions other than California. A student who intends to seek admission to practice law outside of California should contact the admitting authority in that jurisdiction for information regarding its education and admission requirements.

San Diego Branch Accreditation

The San Diego campus is a fully accredited branch campus of San Francisco Law School, which has been continuously accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California State Bar since 1937, when California accreditation began. For that reason, students attending the San Diego branch are not required to pass or sit for the First Year Law Students’ Examination (the “Baby Bar”).

Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation

San Francisco Law School and its San Diego campus are graduate schools of Alliant International University, an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). As schools with WASC accreditation, they are approved by the U.S. Department of Education for financial assistance.
