PhD in Organizational Psychology
PHD IN ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
The doctoral program (PhD) in Organizational Psychology combines coursework in psychology and organizational theory with specialized courses in organizational change and development, industrial psychology, consulting to organizations, and human resources management. The program is offered at three campuses:
- Los Angeles
- San Diego
- San Francisco
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
Students develop professional practice related skills in organizational psychology and consulting through a variety of professional training experiences including class projects, case studies, in-class simulations, and internship.
The curriculum includes the equivalent of one year of full-time professional training placement, which students complete across a variety of settings, including:
- consulting firms
- major corporations
- government agencies
- not-for-profit community organizations
CONVENIENT CLASS SCHEDULE & SHARED CURRICULUM
Courses are offered in convenient daytime, executive, evening and/or condensed formats (varies by campus). Another advantage to the Organizational Psychology PhD program is the shared curriculum, which allows students to access faculty expertise at all three campuses and offers students flexibility to take some courses online and at other campuses.
CONCENTRATIONS AND SPECIALIZATION
- Within the doctoral curriculum, students may customize their education and training through elective coursework, professional fieldwork training and dissertation research, to pursue specific areas of professional interest.
- Doctoral students select either the Strategic Human Resource Management or the Executive Coaching concentration, which are part of the 98-unit PhD program.
- Students in San Diego may also pursue the Consulting Psychology specialization, which builds on the Executive Coaching concentration. Students in this specialization take 14 additional units and a special internship supervised by a licensed psychologist, which will better prepare them for licensure.
THE CONSULTANT / CLIENT RELATIONSHIP
Understanding both sides of the consultant/client relationship is critical to the success of the modern organization. Increasingly, companies use consultants, whether internal to the organization or external contractors, to advise and help managers and executives to design and implement change projects.
Students in the Organizational Psychology PhD program develop skills in research design, measurement and statistical tools appropriate for basic research, as well as for applied research in such areas as organizational consulting, selection testing, surveys, and program evaluations.
