Alliant Faculty Spearheads World Education Conference in Taiwan
SAND DIEGO, Calif. -- Jan. 4, 2013 -- Since January 2002, the Hufstedler School of Education (HSOE) at Alliant International University has been host institution to the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI), a non-governmental organization of the United Nations committed to advancing the achievement of a just and peaceful world community. Every other year, WCCI organizes a World Conference on Education, spearheaded by Alliant’s own, Dr. Estela Matriano, HSOE professor of cross-cultural studies and WCCI executive director and Carole Caparros, project coordinator and WCCI executive assistant, with the assistance of a locally-based conference team.
This year, the WCCI 15th World Conference was held from December 28, 2012 through January 3, 2013 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with the theme, “Educating for Peace and Harmony with the Earth and Ourselves.” The conference explored human relationships to the natural world, relationships within human society, the harms we have done to both and the possibilities for healing the harms through educating for the restorative development of a culture of peace.
Concurrent sessions and workshops covered a variety of topics related to the conference theme including: culture, arts and language, environmental justice, human rights education and poverty reduction, gender education, spirituality, global education, environmental management, green technology and sustainable development, peace education and health education.
